Insider tips and perks for your trip to British Columbia, curated by our experts.

Tips

Tips for Your Trip

  • The most popular way to experience backcountry skiing in British Columbia is by booking a backcountry lodge. Lodges are typically built in remote locations, but rarely lack in amenities and service. The operators we partner with offer an exceptional experience, even in this distant spots. We recommend booking a lodge for a several day trip to make the most of your vacation.
  • BC caters to all experience levels. Each lodge or guiding service is unique, but they can all cater to different skier abilities. Just be sure to be honest about what you are looking to do and your skill/fitness levels. If you are joining a group of both friends and new people, you'll want to be aligned by goals and ability levels.
  • Pack warmly, but in layers. Day to day the weather conditions can change, ranging from cold to wetter to more humid. Having an extra pair of goggles and gloves is a must, and managing moisture throughout the day is part of the game.
Perks

The Perks

British Columbia is host to an incredibly diverse amount of terrain, with endless stretches of pristine powder. There's a reason why many pro skiers call this province home. It also is incredibly accessible. BC backcountry ski routes are very well mapped, with zones and runs clearly marked on most interactive GPS maps. The fact that the region has been well skied means that you get to benefit from that knowledge base, and can find good conditions almost any date in the winter months.

The biggest benefit is getting away from the crowds. In most cases, you'll be shacked up with some close friends in a cozy hut far away from lift lines and crowded concession areas. Instead, you'll have the opportunity to connect with nature and each other in this high alpine retreat. Most people book Backcountry Skiing trips in BC for the camaraderie and escape.

Another huge perk is the conditions. BC is known as the heli skiing capitol of the world, and a lot of that has to do with snowfall and consistent conditions. British Columbia is a powder lovers paradise, and if you are willing to hike uphill, you'll reap the rewards. Ski season starts early in November/December and can stretch into late spring.
