Japan

Japan is quickly becoming one of the most popular skiing destinations in the world. Known for JAPOW, the incredibly light, dry powder snow that covers the mountain regions each year, it's no wonder skiers and snowboarders flock there every year to check it off their bucket list.

Know Before You Go

Insider tips and perks for your trip to Japan, curated by our experts.

Tips

Tips for Your Trip

  • Book with an established provider in the region. It is possible to go to Japan and hire a guide for the day, but getting the most out of your time in the country will require more than just a sidecountry guide. Established providers will make transportation easy and seamless. They will help with understanding cultural norms, and help you navigate the busy cities. A larger group/company will also make sure to incorporate cultural outings as part of your trip. Trust us, there's a good reason to book something more all inclusive.
  • Book more than 8 months in advance. January and February are very popular months in Japan. Although there are many providers and regions to explore, which makes it easier to find availability, the best providers in popular regions fill up fast. If you wait until later in the year to book, the time frame you are hoping for might not be available.
  • Plan for a longer stay. 5 days simply won't be enough. You may not ski ever single day of your trip, but you will want additional time for visiting Tokyo, going to cultural sites, eating, exploring, etc. What makes Japan such a unique ski destination is the culture that surrounds the skiing. Make the long flight worth it and book 7-12 days for your trip.
  • Expect to do a lot of side country skiing. This means you will often start inbounds at a resort, and then your guide will take you out of bounds beyond the resort boundary. This is a common way to explore the backcountry in Japan, so lift tickets will often be part of your overall trip expense. Don't worry though, most are very affordable.
Perks

The Perks

  • The number one reason to go ski touring in Japan is the snow. They are famous for getting huge powder days. The weather systems form over Russia, bringing frigid dry winds from Siberia, which picks up moisture over the Sea of Japan. This pattern results in huge storms, but the climate is pretty temperate compared to other areas. JAPOW is a thing.
  • The food is also incredible. A huge perk of ski touring in Japan is getting to eat a hot bowl of ramen after a big day in the mountains. Japan is famous for its ramen dishes, gyoza, okonomiyaki, and of course sushi. You'll be equally as happy about the food as you will about the skiing conditions. It's a big part of what makes the experience so unique.
  • The Onsen is just another part of the magic of skiing in Japan. A Japanese hot spring, locally known as an onsen, is the perfect after ski activity. These springs are a naturally occuring phenomenon where volcanic activity heats the water. If you travel to Jigokudani, you could spend some time bathing with snow monkeys.
  • Our final perk is a bit broad, but it's the culture of Japan. For those coming from North America and Europe to ski in Japan, it can be a very different ski experience because of the places and the people. We recommend taking some time to either visit a shrine or temple. There are also countless castles built throughout the country. These fortresses are perfectly kept and restored by the government and worth checking out.
