Know Before You Go

Insider tips and perks for your trip to Costa Rica, curated by our experts.

Tips

Tips for Your Trip

  • Flights into San Jose for the Caribbean cost or Liberia are easy and relatively low cost, with commercial flights direct daily.
  • Rent a car with 4 wheel drive and GPS. Some of the roads getting into these surf towns (especially Nosara) can be bump, flooded, muddy or just rough. But trust us, it's worth the drive.
  • Check out Monteverde while you are there. This mountainous region is home to one of the largest diversities of wildlife in the world. It's absolutely incredible if you are looking for an activity to do on an off day.
  • Visit a coffee farm if you get the chance. Most have small cafes nearby. Getting a good cup of Costa Rica coffee directly from the source is important. And try to get it served in a chorreador with a bolsita for a more authentic experience.
Perks

The Perks

  • Ask any surfer their favorite destination for a surf trip, and you'll definitely hear Costa Rica. Costa Rica has become a hotspot for surfers over the last few decades and is only increasing in popularity. Having access to both the Pacific and Caribbean Ocean, you'll get some variety when switching coasts. The Pacific side is famous for its consistent surf breaks, while the Caribbean side can be great when the conditions are right.
  • The Pacific side has a ton to offer. Each region, as you work your way North to South, has it's own unique character. Different regions work better in different times of the year, but it all adds up to terrific breaks almost year round. Consistent SW swells, combined with easterly trade winds, means that you can find waves almost every day.
  • The wave quality is another reason that surfers flock to the country. Depending on the region, waves are typically well spaced and forgiving, glassy, making it a great training ground for intermediate surfers. Smaller beach breaks mean that beginner surfers have something to enjoy as well.
