Powderbird

Alta, UT, United States

Powderbird has been flying skiers and snowboarders into the Wasatch backcountry since 1973, making it one of the longest-running heliskiing operations in the world. Based at Snowbird Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, Powderbird is the only outfitter permitted to guide heliskiing on U.S. Forest Service land in the state — a permit area that adds up to more terrain than all of Utah's ski resorts combined. Guests can choose a Single Day trip or one of Powderbird's Multi-Day packages, which pair guided heliskiing with lodging at The Cliff Lodge at Snowbird. Single Day trips run out of the Powderbird Heliport and include a full day of guided flying, while Multi-Day guests add on spa access, curated meals, and a structured, multi-night itinerary built around back-to-back ski days. A Private Group option is also available for parties who want a helicopter to themselves. Powderbird's guides tailor each day to the group in front of them — from steep, technical lines to wide-open meadow turns — so the experience scales from strong intermediates working on their first backcountry days to seasoned experts chasing vertical. On days when weather keeps the helicopters grounded, Powderbird runs a guided alternative at Snowbird itself, so a storm day doesn't mean a lost day.

Pulseline Adventure

Valdez, Alaska, United States

Pulseline Adventure is a guide-owned heliskiing and heliboarding operation based in Valdez, Alaska, in the heart of the Chugach Mountains. They fly AS350 Astar B2 and B3 helicopters out of Valdez Pioneer Field, five minutes from town, and run remote fuel and staging areas along more than 80 miles of Thompson Pass — so rather than being tied to a single remote lodge, their guides can move to wherever the skiing is best on a given day. Their permitted terrain covers more than 3 million acres across a Chugach National Forest Special Use Permit, a State of Alaska DNR Commercial Recreation Permit, and a US Bureau of Land Management Special Recreation Permit. The Chugach National Forest piece alone spans more than 800,000 acres and is shared by only three permit holders. Snowfall is the headline: Valdez sees 327 inches a year at sea level, Thompson Pass gets more than 700 inches, and some of their zones top 1,000 inches. Single runs regularly deliver 4,000 to 6,000 vertical feet of glaciated, big-mountain terrain above Prince William Sound. Pulseline's flagship program is the 7-day Freeskier package, an all-inclusive week built around pre-purchased helicopter flight time (Hobbs hours), with lodging at the Totem Hotel in Valdez, meals, ground shuttles, and avalanche safety gear included. Groups who want more control over their flight time can step up to Semi-Private or fully Private heliskiing, where one group of up to 8 skiers and 2 guides has the helicopter to themselves. Specialty weeks round out the lineup: an Experts-Only Heliskiing Week for strong riders chasing steeper, more technical lines, a Women's Big Mountain Ski and Ride Camp, and a Men's Health & Longevity Immersion. For skiers who like to earn some of their turns, they also offer heli-assisted backcountry ski touring, a fly-in backcountry touring camp at a remote Chugach glacier basecamp, and guided human-powered backcountry touring. Pulseline runs an active avalanche forecasting program, tracking weather and snowpack throughout the season. Senior guides hold a minimum of Professional Level 2 avalanche certification, all guides carry current EMT, Wilderness First Responder, or Outdoor Emergency Care certification, and their Chief Guide is a licensed Physician Assistant. Beyond Alaska, Pulseline also runs ski trips in Chile and Antarctica.
