Japan Ski Tours

Nishi-tokyo, Tokyo, Japan

Japan Ski Tours runs guided and hosted ski road trips across Japan's three major powder regions: Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Nagano/Niigata. The company was founded in 2014 as part of Japan Guides Group, which started in 2007 as the only English-oriented guiding operation on Mt. Fuji. Japan Ski Tours is run by bilingual guides who grew up in Japan, and it is an ANTA-certified, licensed Japanese travel agency registered in Tokyo. The company is built on the idea that a ski trip to Japan shouldn't force a choice between powder and culture. Their itineraries mix ski days with authentic regional restaurants, in-hotel onsen hot springs, and stays in traditional ryokan inns. Some trips add cultural extras such as a traditional music and dance performance or an evening with a Maiko performer. Their guides and hosts pick restaurants for regional specialties and authenticity, so guests eat where locals eat instead of in the international enclaves of Japan's busiest resorts. Their trips fall into two styles. The guided Hokkaido Storm Chaser is a 7-day off-piste road trip that skis a different resort each of its 6 ski days. It runs from two bases, Furano and Otaru, with a 1:4 guide ratio and a maximum group of 8. Each day's resort is chosen by the forecast, and the focus is lift-accessed sidecountry powder. Private guiding is also available: a private Storm Chaser, a 5-day Hakkoda backcountry trip based in the historic city of Hirosaki, daily backcountry guiding at Ani, and Niseko-area guiding through their partner Hokkaido Vibe. Their Indy Trips are unguided but fully hosted group road trips, built for Indy Pass holders and open to everyone. There are 8- and 10-day Tohoku trips, a 9-day Nagano trip, and a 9-day Hokkaido trip. Each covers accommodation, most meals, private charter transfers between resorts, and a JST host who travels with the group. Guests without an Indy Pass book as Standard Guests with all lift tickets included. Each day is the guest's to shape: resort laps, a touring day, or a rest day exploring the area. Japan Ski Tours also operates its own property, Anaba Lodge, a renovated pension-style ski lodge at the base of Ani Ski Resort in Akita Prefecture, built for skiers who like to earn their turns. Trips run from early January into early March. Contact Heli to book.

Phantom Heli

Squamish , British Columbia , Canada

Phantom Heli is a small-group heliskiing and snowboarding Operator based in Squamish, British Columbia, flying the Coast Mountains of the Sea to Sky corridor between Vancouver and Whistler. The operation is owned and run by local mountain guides, and flies in partnership with Black Tusk Helicopter Inc, which provides the aircraft and holds the Crown land tenure. Their main base is about a 25-minute drive from Whistler Village, with Adventures also departing from Whistler and, for private groups, downtown Vancouver. The tenure covers 247,000 acres of skiable terrain, which Phantom Heli says is more than 33 times the size of Whistler Blackcomb, with over 200 named runs and new ones skied with guests regularly. Many runs drop more than 1,000 meters, the longest top 1,500 meters, and the area averages around 12 meters (40 feet) of snowfall a year. Expect massive coastal glaciers, alpine bowls, old-growth tree skiing, Coast Mountain steeps, and pillows, drops, and spines. Phantom Heli runs its Adventures as single days. The Private package gives one group of up to 4 guests a guide and a helicopter to themselves, while Semi-private days put two groups in one helicopter. Six Run and Freeride 4-run days share a helicopter between three groups. For skiers who want to earn some of their turns, the Heli-Assisted Ski Touring day starts with a helicopter drop and a first descent, then spends the day touring before an afternoon pickup. Every group is capped at 4 guests per guide. A typical heli day starts with an 8:00 AM pickup at your accommodation, safety briefings, and liftoff around 9:00, with a picnic lunch in the mountains. Guides are certified through the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) or the AMGA, and daily guiding operations run in conjunction with Altus Mountain Guides. Guides and pilots work together on a risk management program built around weather and snow conditions, and the head guide makes the fly or no-fly call by 4:30 PM the day before or by 7:30 AM on the day. Black Tusk flies modern A-Star AS350 helicopters seating 4 guests and 1 guide per group, and emergency helicopter evacuation is included for every guest.

Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing

Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada

Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing (STHS) has been running heli-skiing operations out of Revelstoke, British Columbia, since 1978, when Swiss mountain guide Peter Schlunegger — a fourth-generation guide whose family's mountain guiding roots trace back to 1899 in nearby Rogers Pass — staged the operation's first exploratory flights near the Tangiers River in the Selkirk Mountains. Now in its fifth decade, STHS holds the largest heli-ski tenure in Revelstoke: over 500,000 acres and 400+ established runs across the Selkirk and Monashee ranges, bordered by two national parks and averaging 40 to 60 feet of snowfall a year. STHS operates from the Coast Hillcrest Hotel, just minutes from downtown Revelstoke, where guests check in, gear up, and fly directly from the property. The operation runs a mixed helicopter fleet — the Airbus H125 (A-Star), Bell 212, and Bell 412 — flown in partnership with Wildcat Helicopters of Kelowna, BC, allowing STHS to match aircraft to group size, from small private parties to larger multi-day groups. Packages range from single-day outings to week-long multi-day trips, along with private charters, heli-assisted touring for experienced backcountry skiers, and Pinnacle packages that pair private heli-skiing with luxury partner-lodge stays. All guiding is provided by ACMG/IFMGA-certified guides, and every package includes use of STHS's powder ski and snowboard fleet along with emergency medical and helicopter evacuation coverage. Since 2007, STHS has operated as part of Revelstoke Mountain Resort, giving guests the option to pair their heli-skiing with lift access to North America's highest vertical descent (5,620 feet) at the neighboring resort. STHS is led today by General Manager Dave Pehowich, who joined the operation in 1996 and worked his way up through guiding and operations before taking the role in 2022.
