Aspen Heliskiing

Aspen, Colorado, United States

Aspen Heliskiing is the only heliskiing operation based in Aspen, Colorado. They run only private charter days, flying from Aspen Airport into a 26,000-acre heli ski zone in the San Juan Mountains. Every day is built around a dedicated helicopter and a private group, so guests never share a machine or a guide with strangers. The day starts at Aspen Airport's private aviation terminal (FBO). From there, guests fly roughly 45 minutes south through the Rockies, passing over nine different wilderness areas on the way to the San Juans. Guests who want a shorter transfer can arrange their own fixed-wing flight to Telluride, either the evening before or the morning of, and get picked up there for a 6-minute helicopter hop to the terrain. According to Aspen Heliskiing, the San Juans typically get more snow than anywhere else in Colorado, and the zone's high elevation keeps powder fresh for weeks after a storm. The operation is affiliated with Silverton Mountain and run out of the Silverton Mountain office. That means the guides are Silverton Mountain guides who know the San Juan range, its snowpack, and the helicopters flown there. Helicopter operations are provided by Precision LLC, an FAA-authorized air carrier. Days are priced at a flat rate for groups of up to 3 skiers or snowboarders. Larger groups can be accommodated with a second helicopter or a larger aircraft. The operation runs 7 days a week through the winter, with peak demand from mid-January through March. For travelers who want big-mountain heliskiing without the long trip north to Canada, it's a compelling option much closer to home.

Silverton Mountain

Silverton, CO, United States

Silverton Mountain is a ski and heli-ski operation based in Silverton, Colorado, in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. It's the highest and steepest ski area in North America, with a peak elevation of 13,487' and a base at 10,400'. A single chairlift carries riders to 12,300', unloading at the top of a cirque that opens onto bowls, chutes, cliffs, and natural terrain with up to 3,000' of vertical in a single run — the mountain is left in its natural state, with no groomed runs or cut trails. The winter season (late December through mid-March) runs on a fully guided model, with groups of roughly eight led by expert guides Thursday through Sunday. From mid-March through mid-April, the mountain shifts to an unguided spring season for experienced Silverton skiers and riders, accessible with a lift ticket or season pass. Heliskiing runs year-round, seven days a week, and Silverton stands out as the only heli operator in the continental U.S. offering everything from a single add-on heli run to a full 6-run heli day, private small-group trips, and fully private helicopter charters across a terrain zone spanning roughly 29,000–40 square miles. Terrain here is advanced-to-expert only, and Silverton is upfront that this is not a beginner mountain — it's built for skiers and riders looking for a real backcountry experience without giving up lift access. Guests unsure of their fit can take the mountain's online ability quiz before booking. Silverton also offers full private mountain buyouts for groups, corporate events, and reunions. Recommended trip length is 2–3 days, and the town of Silverton — about an hour from both Durango and Montrose airports — offers a range of independent lodging options for guests to base out of during their stay.

Telluride Helitrax

Telluride, CO, United States

Telluride Helitrax has been guiding guests through the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado since 1982, when four local ski partners built a heliskiing operation around their shared love of ski mountaineering. Still family-owned today, Telluride Helitrax describes itself as Colorado's only full-service helicopter skiing operation, working under a US Forest Service Special Use Permit that covers more than 200 square miles (128,000 acres) of high alpine basins, cirques, and summits around Telluride — nearly all of it above tree line. Guests fly in small groups of four to one guide aboard a Eurocopter AS350 B3e or in larger groups in the Bell 407 HP helicopter, both built for high-altitude mountain flying. A typical day includes six guided runs totaling roughly 10,000 to 14,000 vertical feet, with terrain ranging from 10,000 to 13,500 feet in elevation and individual runs dropping 1,000 to 3,000 feet. Most of the skiing is moderate in angle — comparable to double-blue and single-black terrain at Telluride Ski Resort — with steeper lines available for stronger groups when conditions allow. Telluride Helitrax runs three main heliskiing formats: daily trips for individuals and small groups, fully custom private tours for groups of up to 16, and regional tours that fly guests in via private charter from Aspen, Vail, or Steamboat for a day of skiing before returning them home in time for happy hour. Beyond heliskiing, the operator also offers guided backcountry ski touring, scenic helicopter flights and film-support charters, and avalanche forecasting and mitigation consulting. The heliskiing season typically runs from the December holidays through early April, with Telluride Helitrax flying seven days a week when weather and snow conditions allow. Telluride Helitrax is a member of Heli-Ski US and meets that organization's Heli-Skiing Safety & Operating Guidelines annually, with guides who combine mountain guiding certifications with decades of San Juan backcountry experience.
