About

Black Ops Valdez (BOV) is a family-owned heliskiing, snowcat skiing, and sled skiing Operator based in Valdez, Alaska, in the eastern Chugach Mountains around Thompson Pass. Josh and Tabatha Swierk moved to Alaska from Maine in 2004 and started out snowmachine (snowmobile) skiing around Thompson Pass and Valdez. They built Robe Lake Lodge in 2008, added helicopters in 2012, and still run the operation today. BOV says it's the only Alaskan operation that has been run by its original Valdez owners since the day it started. The terrain covers more than 2,500 square miles of mountains and glaciers around Valdez and Thompson Pass, with a maritime snowpack and, by BOV's count, more than 1,000 inches of snow a year. Heli runs range from about 2,500 to 6,000 vertical feet, and the terrain steps up from 20- to 30-degree warm-up runs all the way to 40- to 65-degree faces and tight chutes. Guides usually start a group on a couple of mellower runs to gauge ability before moving into steeper terrain. Valdez and Thompson Pass sit in the middle of all this, so flights out to the ski zones are short. Every heliski run is flown in an AS350 A-Star / Airbus H125. BOV builds its heliskiing around Hobbs hours, the helicopter's own flight meter, instead of promising a set number of runs or vertical feet. Guests can see exactly where their flight time goes, and experienced skiers can help decide how to spend it, whether that's chasing unridden peaks, flying to better weather, or lapping classics close to home. Groups ski four to a guide and average about 8 runs per Hobbs hour. The lineup is wide: all-inclusive 3-, 4-, and 7-night packages at Robe Lake Lodge, a fully private week with its own A-Star and 2 guides, semi-private packages based in a downtown harbor-front apartment, in-town hotel packages, single-day heliskiing, heli and touring trips aboard a 70-foot yacht in Prince William Sound, a private-only package at Sheep Mountain Lodge on the north side of the Chugach, a remote touring camp, and custom private packages for adaptive skiers. The heliski season runs from late February into early May, and week-long packages run Sunday to Sunday. Storm days are part of skiing the Chugach, and BOV plans for them with what it calls No Down Days. When the helicopters can't fly, guests can go snowcat or sled skiing across seven permitted zones stretching from tidewater in Valdez to the interior side of Thompson Pass, or book snowmobile tours, boat tours on Port Valdez, ice climbing, ski touring, firearms shooting, or a massage. Hiking the Valdez Glacier ice caves, snowshoeing, fat biking, and the lodge hot tub and sauna cost nothing extra. BOV says it offers more down-day options than any other Alaskan operator. The guide team includes Jerry Hance, whom BOV describes as the original heliski guide in Alaska, with 35 years of forecasting and guiding in the state, alongside guides who've worked across Alaska, Canada, Japan, Antarctica, and New Zealand. Every guide holds US Avalanche Level II or III or Canadian Level II certification, carries medical training such as WFR, OEC, or EMT, and is trained in rope skills and crevasse rescue.

  • Robe Lake Lodge & Cabins

Robe Lake Lodge & Cabins is Black Ops Valdez's home base and the lodging for their all-inclusive heliski packages. The Alaskan-style log lodge overlooks Robe Lake, between downtown Valdez and Thompson Pass, about 6 miles from the Valdez airport and about 10 miles from BOV's Keystone Village heli pad at the base of Thompson Pass. Most guests drive about 10 minutes to the heli pad, while the private helicopter usually flies straight from the lodge. Josh and Tabatha Swierk built the lodge in 2008, and Hogback Mountain, one of BOV's sled-riding areas, rises directly behind it. The main lodge has 2 double rooms and 4 single rooms and works especially well for private heli groups of 6 to 10. Guests have a hot tub, a sauna, high-speed internet, satellite TV, and a private chef who cooks for each heliski group, serving a hot breakfast, a sack lunch, and Alaskan dinners built around steak and fresh local seafood. A massage therapist is available on request. Five cabins sit on the same property: Eagle's Nest, a three-story, 1,200-square-foot cabin on its own driveway above the lodge that sleeps up to 8, with a full kitchen and two decks; Caribou, which sleeps 4 and has a full kitchen; and Moose, Bear, and Wolf, which each sleep 2 adults and have a kitchenette. Every cabin has a full bathroom, a front porch or deck, and Wi-Fi. Guests are placed in the main lodge or a cabin based on party size, couples, and family groups, and nobody is asked to share a room with someone outside their own party.

  • Valdez Harbor Front Apartment

The Valdez Harbor Front Apartment is the base for Black Ops Valdez's semi-private heliski packages, which put a group of up to 4 on a shared helicopter for 3, 4, or 7 nights. The apartment sits on the harbor front in downtown Valdez, with a large covered balcony looking out over the harbor and the Chugach Mountains. It has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom and sleeps up to 6: two private rooms with queen beds and a third with extra-long twin bunk beds made for adults. The bathroom has a heated jet tub, and the fully equipped kitchen, six-seat dining table, propane grill, and 65-inch smart TV make it easy to settle in. Harbor Front packages don't include meals or transportation, so this is the pick for groups who want to cook for themselves and explore town on their own schedule. Private smart-lock entry and free off-street parking round it out.

  • Sheep Mountain Lodge

Sheep Mountain Lodge is the base for Black Ops Valdez's private-only heliski package on the north side of the Chugach Mountains. The lodge overlooks the Matanuska River Valley, just minutes from the Matanuska Glacier, and the helicopter parks right outside. The package is for groups of up to 8 and includes lodging, meals, transfers to and from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, 14 hours in an exclusive AS-350 helicopter, and safety gear. Snow on this interior side of the range is generally lighter, and the weather can be better here when coastal storms keep helicopters grounded elsewhere. Guests stay in cabins. The 4 Premier Cabins each have a full kitchen, private bath, two queen beds, and a full-size sleeper sofa, plus a deck with views of the valley and the mountains. The 7 Classic Cabins each have a private bath, a queen bed (five also have a twin), a small refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, and a deck where Dall sheep can be spotted on the mountainside. The lodge restaurant is a short walk away and serves fresh Alaska seafood, steaks, and homemade desserts, with specialties like fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, strawberry-rhubarb pie, and sourdough bread, using Palmer-area produce in season. Down-day options here include snowmobile tours, cross-country skiing, ski touring on the north side of Sheep Mountain, and the hot tub.

  • M/V Alaskan Adventurer

The M/V Alaskan Adventurer is the 70-foot live-aboard yacht Black Ops Valdez uses for its Alaska Yacht Skiing trips in Prince William Sound. It works as a mobile lodge, moving between remote bays and wildlife areas and giving guests a warm, dry base camp in the Chugach. The vessel sleeps 6 in 3 private staterooms with 2 full bathrooms, and it has a full modern kitchen and a living area with leather couches and a flat-screen TV. The lead guide doubles as the vessel's captain and works alongside an assistant guide. Trips run two ways. Heli Yacht packages, private or semi-private for up to 6 guests, pair the boat with guided heliskiing. Touring packages are human-powered, with runs of 3,000 to 5,000 feet that end at the ocean, in either a 6-day, 5-night format with 4 touring days or a 4-day, 3-night format with 2 touring days, for groups of 4 to 6. A heliski day can be added to a touring package at a discounted rate. Every yacht package includes all meals, from hearty breakfasts to dinners of spot prawns, halibut, Copper River red salmon, and barbecued steak, plus backcountry safety gear and all ground transportation in Valdez.

The package includes ground transportation on arrival in Valdez, helicopter transport to and from the field, and all meals.
