About

Great Canadian Heli-Skiing operates out of Heather Mountain Lodge, located between Golden and Revelstoke, British Columbia, in the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges where heli-skiing itself began. The operation holds an exclusive licence to roughly 2,250 square kilometres of terrain — an area about 14 times the size of Whistler-Blackcomb — spanning steeps, open alpine bowls, glaciers, glades, mushroom and pillow lines, and burnt-tree terrain, all within the world-famous interior BC powder belt that sees up to 46 feet (14 metres) of snow a season. Founded in 1988 on a small-group promise of four skiers to one guide, Great Canadian Heli-Skiing has kept that ratio ever since, along with unlimited vertical guarantees on every package — guests can ski or ride beyond their guaranteed vertical at no extra charge. The operation was owned by Greg and Maaike Porter from 2000 until 2022, when it was acquired by Heli, which continues to run it with the existing staff, guides, and management. Guests can choose from five package types: Classic (a small group of four matched by skill level and interest), Group Booking (a private group that shares a helicopter with others but never flies alongside them), Private Helicopter (a dedicated helicopter and two guides), Private Lodge (the entire lodge, its terrain, two helicopters, and the team, exclusively), and a First Time Heli Skier's Week designed for newcomers. Trip lengths run from 2 days up to a full week or more, and guests can combine tour dates for an extended stay. Thanks to the lodge's snow-consistent location and its close proximity to the terrain, Great Canadian Heli-Skiing averages 98% fly days — about two down days per season, well below the regional average.

  • Heather Mountain Lodge

Heather Mountain Lodge is Great Canadian Heli-Skiing's base of operations, situated halfway between Golden and Revelstoke, British Columbia, on the edge of Glacier National Park. It's where guests stay for the duration of their trip and where each ski day begins and ends — the heli-pad sits just steps from the lodge, and the closest runs are only about a minute's flight away. Built in 1996 and upgraded in 2019, the lodge combines a rustic, cozy-chic mountain-lodge feel with modern amenities: cellular reception and wireless internet, in-room Nespresso machines, flat-screen TVs with satellite, deep-soaking tubs, an on-site massage therapist, a ski shop, an outdoor hot tub and sauna, and the Woolly Toque backcountry bar. Guests looking for extra privacy can upgrade to one of two private cabins, built in 2012, each with a wood-burning stove, a view of Glacier National Park, and a deep-soaking tub. The lodge is also known for upscale, mountain-inspired cuisine served to the group each evening. Despite its remote feel, it's considered one of the world's most accessible heli-skiing destinations — Calgary International Airport is a four-hour drive away, and the lodge is 45 minutes west of Golden or an hour east of Revelstoke, just off the Trans-Canada Highway.
