About

Great Northern Powder Guides (GNPG) is a family-run backcountry cat skiing and snowboarding Operator based about 20 miles north of Whitefish, Montana. Their custom snowcats access more than 20,000 acres of terrain in the Stillwater State Forest, in Montana's Northern Rocky Mountains, where peaks reach 7,500 feet, descents run up to 3,788 vertical feet, and snowfall averages 350 inches a year. The terrain is varied: evenly spaced glades, natural pillows, rolling meadows, steep tree runs, and tight, technical chutes, plus burn zones where summer wildfires have left a mix of open slopes and tree runs. GNPG holds an exclusive lease on the area, and because prescribed burns and logging in the Stillwater State Forest keep opening new runs, the terrain is still growing. A portion of that lease revenue supports Montana's public schools. Day trips run on two cats: the Powder Cat, for advanced skiers and riders, and the Steep & Deep Cat, for advanced-to-expert skiers and riders after bigger lines, tighter trees, and steeper chutes. Groups can also book a cat privately. For a longer stay, GNPG offers two lodge-based Adventures: The Ultimate Montana Cat Ski & Ranch Stay, based at The Ranch in Whitefish and billed as Montana's only cat skiing and ranch stay package, and the Powder House Backcountry Adventure, a private, off-grid yurt stay with a dedicated cat and guides who stay on-site. The season runs from late December through mid-March. GNPG was founded by the Sandelin family, several of whom still work in the operation, and is now owned and operated by year-round Whitefish residents Bill and Barbara Wetzel. It's a local outfit, not a corporate one. It's also easy to reach: Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell is 45–50 minutes from basecamp, Whitefish Mountain Resort is nearby, and many guests add a few resort days before or after their cat trip. For U.S. travelers, that means Northern Rockies cat skiing with no border crossing.

Great Northern Powder Guides' snowcat basecamp sits on US-93 in Olney, Montana, about 25 minutes north of downtown Whitefish and 45–50 minutes from Glacier Park International Airport. Every cat day starts and ends here. Guests arrive at 8:00 a.m. for coffee, gear rentals, and avalanche beacon assignment, and to meet their guides before the cats head out at 8:45 a.m. Groups return around 5:00 p.m., depending on conditions. • The Ranch — Whitefish, Montana

The Ranch is home base for GNPG's Ultimate Montana Cat Ski & Ranch Stay, set on an authentic working ranch in Whitefish, Montana. Guests stay in a three-level lodge and log cabins, with rooms based on double occupancy; single upgrades are available, and premium log cabins can be requested. It's well placed for a ski trip: about 15 minutes from GNPG's snowcat basecamp, 5 minutes from downtown Whitefish, 15 minutes from Whitefish Mountain Resort, and 20 minutes from Glacier Park International Airport. Meals are served in the Horseshoe dining hall, where the ranch's chefs cook hearty Montana fare using local ingredients where possible. After skiing, guests can settle into the lounge and bar, gather around the fireplace, soak in the hot tub, or play pool in the games room, and on-site massage is available in 30-, 60-, or 90-minute sessions. Extra nights before or after a trip can be added on a space-available basis, and larger groups can book the full lodge privately.

  • Powder House

The Powder House is GNPG's off-grid backcountry yurt, a custom-built, 30-foot roundhouse deep in the Montana backcountry. It plays two roles in GNPG's trips. Day-tour groups stop here midday for a hot lunch, and on the Powder House Backcountry Adventure, a single private group of up to 10 guests gets the yurt to themselves overnight, along with their own private cat and guides who stay on-site. Inside, there's a full kitchen, a spacious living area, a big-screen TV and sound system, a game area, a bar, and a wood stove, with sleeping quarters (bedding included) on the full downstairs level and Wi-Fi via Starlink. Overnight guests get all their meals: hearty dinners, mountain breakfasts, and lunches out on the snow. Stays require a minimum 2-night booking.
