Arctic Heli Skiing
Dalvik, Nordurland Eystra, Iceland
Arctic Heli Skiing (AHS) is a heliskiing and heliboarding Operator based on the Troll Peninsula in North Iceland, between the fjords of Skagafjörður and Eyjafjörður, with a second program on the east coast of Greenland. Founded and owned by Jökull Bergmann, whose grandparents were the last sheep farmers at the operation's home lodge, AHS has been running ski trips on the Troll Peninsula for more than 20 years. Their guides are Iceland's only internationally certified mountain guides, most of them Canadian-trained, and the operation follows Canadian heliskiing standards. The defining feature here is summit-to-sea skiing. Around 90% of the Troll Peninsula's mountains are skiable, peaks rise to about 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), and the average run drops roughly 900 meters (3,000 feet), with many lines finishing right on the coastline where the helicopter picks up. The terrain ranges from wide, low-angle glacier runs suited to first-time heliskiers to steep couloirs and faces for experts. There are no trees, so no tree wells. The season runs from February into late June, and it shifts character as it goes: cold snow and powder with a chance at the Northern Lights through mid-April, corn snow with occasional fresh snow on northern aspects from mid-April through May, and corn snow under the midnight sun in June, when guests can ski at any hour. Mid-April to mid-May is peak season and books up well in advance. Programs run 4 or 6 days and are priced on helicopter flight time rather than vertical. The Classic program puts up to 3 groups of 4 on one helicopter, Premium caps it at 2 groups, and the Private programs give a group of up to 4 its own helicopter, including an Ultimate Private option with unlimited flying for skiing, a private lodge, and a private chef. AHS flies Airbus H125/AS350 B3e and H130 helicopters operated by Heli Austria, and the main lodge hosts a maximum of 16 guests per week. Most guests stay at Klængshóll, a centuries-old family farm in Skíðadalur (Ski Valley), with private cabins, a spa house, and meals built around local lamb, fish, and game. In Greenland, AHS runs 7-night expeditionary programs out of Hotel Kulusuk in the Ammassalik region, with first descents above frozen fjords and icebergs.
Viking Heliskiing
Siglufjörður, Nordurland Eystra, Iceland
Viking Heliskiing is a family-owned heliskiing and heliboarding Operator based in Siglufjörður, Iceland's northernmost town, on the Troll Peninsula (Tröllaskagi) in North Iceland. Founded by Björgvin and Jóhann, lifelong friends and local mountain guides, the company is run by two Icelandic families and built on more than a decade of guiding in the region. Siglufjörður sits about 25 km from the Arctic Circle and is surrounded by the same mountains Viking skis, so the terrain starts right outside town. Viking says it operates on the largest privately owned heliskiing terrain in Europe, spread across the Troll Peninsula and Iceland's Gold Coast. Vertical drops reach up to 1,500 meters (about 4,500 feet), and many runs go from summit all the way down to the North Atlantic. The season runs from early March into June, moving from powder early on to stable spring corn snow later, often under the midnight sun. Northern Lights viewing is best from early March through mid-April. What sets Viking apart is how the skiing is sold. They're the only Operator in Iceland that packages heliskiing by vertical feet rather than helicopter flight time, so guests pay for the skiing itself. Classic packages run 3, 4, or 5 days with a set amount of vertical, in groups of 4 guests and 1 guide, with up to 3 groups per helicopter. Private and semi-private packages give one or two groups their own helicopter with unlimited vertical, based either at Sigló Hotel in Siglufjörður or at Eldar North Lodge, a private four-suite lodge on the Eyjafjörður fjord near Akureyri with the helicopter based on site. Viking also offers heli-assisted touring, pure ski touring, and custom trips. Packages include lodging, breakfast, lunch, and a three-course dinner each day, plus a new-each-season fleet of K2 skis and snowboards and a full BCA avalanche safety kit. Flights are run with partner SENNAIR in AS-350 B3 (Airbus H125) helicopters, flown by Arctic-trained pilots.
